Heat Alert Raised in Gran Canaria as Temperatures Soar
The Canary Islands’ Emergency Management Directorate has upgraded Gran Canaria to an alert status for extreme heat, starting from 10:00 on Monday, 7 September. The other islands remain on pre-alert.
This decision follows information from the State Meteorological Agency and other sources, as part of the Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Meteorological Events.
Gran Canaria is set to experience tropical-like heat, with temperatures exceeding 35°C in many areas, particularly in the Tejeda basin and on southern and western slopes. Localised temperatures could reach up to 39°C in mid and high areas of the southern half, with possible highs of 40°C on Tuesday.
In El Hierro and La Gomera, maximum temperatures could touch 36°C in the southern parts, especially in mid and high areas. La Palma is expected to hit 34°C across higher elevations and western slopes on Tuesday, with 36°C in El Paso and parts of La Caldera de Taburiente.
Tenerife will likely see general temperatures of 33°C, with some areas possibly exceeding 34°C. From Tuesday, temperatures may rise further in southern and western mountainous regions, approaching 36°C.
Fuerteventura and Lanzarote will also experience heat, with the southern halves of both islands affected the most. Temperatures could reach 36°C, particularly on Tuesday.
Nighttime temperatures are expected to remain high, not dropping below 25 or 26°C, especially in the Las Palmas province, making it difficult for residents to rest and recover from the heat.
