Canary Government Calls for Urgent Support for Ceuta Amid Migrant Influx
The Canary Islands government has expressed solidarity with Ceuta in response to the arrival of thousands of migrants from Morocco. Vice Councillor Octavio Caraballo urged the Spanish government to quickly implement a shared solution.
Caraballo highlighted that when a border faces extraordinary pressure, the entire state must respond. He stressed the importance of European Union involvement in providing resources and a cohesive migration policy that combines humanity with security.
He stated, “What is happening in the autonomous city is not just a problem for Ceuta; it is a challenge for the state and for Europe as well.” Caraballo noted that the Canary Islands have long been the primary maritime entry point for migrants and have consistently sought a collective approach to migration challenges, emphasizing that no border territory should tackle this issue alone.
He concluded, “Canarias will always stand by Ceuta because solidarity should not depend on geography or political affiliations; it must be unconditional.”
