Tenerife Implements Enhanced Fire Prevention Measures
Tenerife’s Cabildo has activated Grade 1 emergency fire prevention measures following a high-risk alert from the Canary Islands government due to adverse weather conditions. The measures took effect today, Tuesday 30 June, at 07:00 and will remain in place until the alert is lifted.
Rosa Dávila, president of the Cabildo, urged the public to act responsibly in light of the heightened fire risk. “We are facing a particularly delicate situation where any carelessness could have severe consequences for Tenerife,” she stated. Dávila highlighted that prevention is crucial for protecting the island’s natural heritage and the safety of its residents.
The new restrictions aim to minimise activities that could ignite fires as temperatures soar and humidity drops. Key restrictions include a ban on outdoor fires, barbecues, and gas stoves, along with prohibiting smoking in recreational areas, campgrounds, trails, and public viewpoints in high-risk zones. Firework displays and the use of spark-generating machinery or tools are also suspended.
Access is permitted on island roads, and residents can enter their properties, but the Cabildo advises limiting time spent in forested areas. They recommend staying away from forested regions unless absolutely necessary and exercising caution in all activities that might start a fire, even outside designated risk areas.
The Cabildo emphasises that effective prevention is the best way to safeguard Tenerife’s natural landscape, appealing for public cooperation and individual responsibility to prevent dangerous situations. Ongoing monitoring of weather conditions and risk levels will be conducted to ensure public safety and environmental protection.
