The Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa has begun drafting the General Budget for 2027, following Monday’s approval by the Governing Council of the criteria, guidelines, and schedule for next year’s accounts.
Cabildo President Oswaldo Betancort stated that this approval initiates a crucial process to ensure the economic stability of the institution. “This governing body has already approved three budgets, always prioritising the citizens of Lanzarote and La Graciosa and focusing on social policies and genuine community needs,” he said.
Vice President and Minister of Finance and Contracts, María Jesús Tovar, explained that work on the budget will ramp up in September. “In the first few days of September, the deadline for autonomous agencies to submit their initial budget proposals will close, after which we will proceed with the overall preparation of the 2027 accounts,” she detailed.
The approval allows for the gathering of economic proposals from different sectors and agencies under the Cabildo. The institution aims to finalise the budget document over the coming months, marking the last budget of this term.
Tovar reiterated the government’s commitment to approving the budget on time, as with the previous three budgets.
For 2026, the General Budget has exceeded €340 million after incorporating surplus funds. The Cabildo has allocated these resources to address needs in areas such as housing, transport, water, security, employment, and education. The budget also reinforces the Municipal Cooperation Plan and various investments for the municipalities of Lanzarote and La Graciosa.
“We aimed from the start of our term to rigorously approve the budget each year. We have done so, and with that same goal, we now begin the process for the final budget of this mandate,” concluded Tovar.
