The Lanzarote Island Promotion Society (SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote) awarded the ‘Lanzarote Island’ and ‘Distinguished Tourism’ prizes during a council meeting on Thursday. These awards, given annually by the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, celebrate the contributions of individuals and organisations to the island’s tourism development, coinciding with World Tourism Day.
Oswaldo Betancort, the President of the Cabildo, congratulated all the recipients, emphasising that each one plays a crucial role in shaping Lanzarote as a tourist destination. He expressed pride in the local tourism sector and noted these awards publicly recognise the efforts of those who have helped create modern Lanzarote.
The coveted Lanzarote Island Award was unanimously awarded to Bienvenido Saavedra Ramón, a key figure in the Puerto del Carmen tourism scene and former director of the Fariones Group. This honour acknowledges his over 50 years of dedication to the island’s hotel industry.
For the 2026 Distinguished Tourism Awards, the Girasol and Enriqueta guesthouses in La Graciosa were recognised in the Company category for their pioneering role in establishing accommodation infrastructure in Caleta de Sebo. The Zonzamas Handball Club received the Event, Cultural, and/or Sporting Manifestation award for promoting female sports in Lanzarote.
