The official Agrocanarias 2026 competition has recognised the top salt producers in the Canary Islands, highlighting the significance of Canarian salt in the region’s cuisine. Organised by the Canary Islands government, the event aims to celebrate the unique artisanal products from the Atlantic archipelago.

This year, Salinas del Carmen from Fuerteventura won the title of Best Sea Salt in the Canary Islands and received a special award for Best Organic Product. The coastal site is regarded as a Cultural Heritage Site, helping to preserve the island’s rich cultural and environmental legacy.

Lanzarote also made a strong showing, with Salinas de Janubio winning the award for Best Innovation due to their impressive branding and presentation. They also earned a well-deserved gold medal in the competitive category for virgin sea salt.

La Palma saw its Salinas de Fuencaliente awarded a celebrated gold medal, while Salinas de Bocacangrejo in Gran Canaria also took home gold. In total, Fuerteventura secured four prizes, and Lanzarote three. Narvay Quintero, the regional councillor, praised the overall high standard of the awards, stating that each winning producer’s success reflects their commitment.

Local producers use time-honoured, traditional techniques passed down through generations. The islands generate about 2,700 tonnes of salt annually, representing significant economic value and maintaining cultural traditions. The extraction process involves harnessing marine water that crashes against the rugged coast, allowing evaporation to form salt crystals without machinery.

The importance of the Agrocanarias competition was emphasised by Luis Arráez from ICCA, who noted that it not only recognizes the best products but also serves as a strong promotional tool for local businesses.

The judging panel evaluated the entries through blind taste tests, assessing aroma, flavour, and texture to confirm that Canarian salt stands at an internationally competitive level.
