The director of the Health Area in Lanzarote, Erasmo García, expressed his concern over the political implications of a recent protest defending the Insular Hospital. While acknowledging the valid worries of those involved, he insisted that the transfer of services to a new multi-purpose building will improve conditions for both patients and staff.

Speaking on Crónicas Radio’s “A Buena Hora” programme, García stated that the demonstration appeared politically motivated, filled with misinformation. “Some mayors reportedly provided buses to transport people to the protest,” he claimed, adding, “It’s unacceptable to mislead the public.”

García stressed that any changes aim to prioritise patient safety, backed by expert assessments highlighting the urgent need for intervention due to structural issues at the hospital. The decision to move services is based on technical advice rather than political motivations. He pointed out that past inaction has compounded the problems faced by the hospital.

Responding to criticism from the PSOE and Nueva Canarias parties regarding a lack of timelines for the hospital’s renovations, García explained that establishing dates is complex, particularly when the priority is ensuring patient safety during the transition. The multi-purpose building, which had significant deterioration upon inspection, is expected to be completed within four months, after which services will gradually shift to the new facility.

He reassured that all current hospital staff, including specialists like geriatricians and physiotherapists, will retain their positions, with many even benefiting from improved working conditions. Plans for the hospital’s future use will be addressed through a dedicated technical committee.

Finally, addressing concerns about a general strike by medical professionals affecting the region, García noted that discussions between the Minister of Health and the medical strike committee have stalled, impacting healthcare across Spain.
