The Cultural Council of Tenerife will participate in the San Cristóbal de La Laguna Book Fair from 8 to 12 October at the Plaza del Cristo, showcasing a line-up of eight esteemed authors. This year’s programme aims to highlight a balanced mix of different generations, genres, and trends in contemporary literature.

Among the featured writers are six local authors: Pedro Flores, Lola Suárez, Víctor Álamo de la Rosa, Alicia Llarena, Sophia Hidalgo, and Lana Corujo, alongside Spanish literary figures José Ángel Mañas and Alejandro Palomas. The selections encompass poetry, storytelling, children’s literature, and new Canarian narratives.

José Carlos Acha, the island’s councillor for Culture, Museums, and Sports, emphasised the significance of the council’s involvement, stating it provides a vital opportunity to connect literature with the community and showcase local talent. Acha noted the intention behind the diverse programme, aiming to create intergenerational appeal by combining established voices from the islands with notable national authors.

He remarked on the current richness and diversity within Canarian literature, praising emerging writers like Sophia Hidalgo and Lana Corujo alongside more established figures such as Pedro Flores and Lola Suárez. He also underscored the contributions of Mañas and Palomas.

Barcelona-born Alejandro Palomas, known for his links to contemporary narrative and young adult literature, will present his works, having won the National Prize for Children’s and Young Adult Literature in 2016 for Un hijo and the Nadal Prize in 2018 for Un amor. His notable titles include Una madre, Un perro, Un secreto, Un país con tu nombre, and Una vida.

Recent publications from the participating authors include Como si hubiera muerto una niña by Pedro Flores, ¿Quién es Bruno? by Lola Suárez, Archipiélago herreño by Víctor Álamo de la Rosa, Tiempo de ciruelos y adjetivos by Alicia Llarena, Tontos tus fieles by Sophia Hidalgo, Han cantado bingo by Lana Corujo, El enigma del Papa Luna by José Ángel Mañas, and Alejandro Palomas’s latest work, Una vida.

Acha concluded by noting that a book fair should serve as a meeting place for authors and readers across generations and differing creative perspectives. He hopes the event will cater to all tastes and ages, while bolstering Tenerife’s literary and cultural landscape.
