Arrecife has opened Lanzarote’s first public family terrace at the Parque Temático, thanks to a new concession from the central government secured by Mayor Yonathan de León. This initiative aims to breathe new life into the urban park, which will also see improvements including extensive green spaces, sports facilities, recreational areas for children, and a dog park.
At a press conference held at the park, Mayor de León discussed the challenges faced since losing the concession in 2018, when the Socialist Party was in power. He highlighted the recent transfer of coastal management from the central government to the Canary Islands government, which has allowed for the restoration of the concession to the city.
The council has invested in upgrading the park, which had fallen into disrepair over the years. Improvements include renovating old toilets, enhancing access around the park’s central square, and expanding the children’s playground with new, accessible attractions.
The new terrace, featuring tropical umbrellas, tables, and stools, will launch on Thursday, August 27, coinciding with the full moon and lunar eclipse. Located near the revamped children’s area and public toilets, it will offer families a relaxing outdoor space.
Following the terrace’s opening, the Commerce and Tourism department, led by Councillor Eli Merino, plans several initiatives to encourage families to utilise the public space. Families will enjoy a combination of leisure, playground activities, and food trucks that have been permitted by the council to enhance the area’s appeal.
This initiative aligns with Mayor de León’s broader strategy to transform Arrecife into a hub for shopping, entertainment, and events, providing local families with a modern, public area for recreation and culinary experiences featuring local products.
