The Canary Islands are set to experience a slight reprieve from recent intense heat this Saturday, with the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) predicting lower temperatures in mid-altitude areas and on high peaks. Although the heat will persist at around 30°C in many parts, localised highs could reach 34°C in the south-east of Gran Canaria.
Cloudy skies are expected in the northern regions, particularly at higher elevations, where light drizzles may occur. A moderate north-easterly wind will prevail, with strong gusts likely on exposed slopes early in the day.
The most noticeable temperature reductions will be in south- and west-facing mid-altitude zones, offering some relief after recent high temperatures. However, nights will remain warm, with coastal and inland areas of southern Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Gomera, and El Hierro seeing minimum temperatures between 24°C and 26°C.
In coastal regions and Lanzarote, changes in temperature will be minor, as much of the heat will remain in low-lying areas. The Tejeda basin and south-eastern Tenerife are expected to stay close to 30°C, while sea conditions reflect strong north-easterly winds, with waves reaching between one and two metres.
In Tenerife, cloudy weather in the north may bring light rain to mid-altitude areas, while temperatures will be cooler in the south. Santa Cruz de Tenerife is expected to reach a maximum of 29°C.
Gran Canaria’s north will stay cloudy, with possible drizzle towards evening, yet the south-eastern region might hit 34°C. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is forecasted to peak at around 27°C.
Lanzarote will see clouds in the north and west but will likely clear up later in the day, with temperatures reaching about 30°C. Fuerteventura will experience partly cloudy skies, maintaining a temperature close to 30°C.
In La Palma, cloudy conditions and a chance of drizzle are expected, while temperatures will decrease inland. La Gomera’s north will be overcast, with some light rain possible, with southern areas reaching around 30°C.
Cloud cover will also affect El Hierro, although clearer skies are predicted for most of the island. Temperatures may touch 30°C in southern regions, while Valverde could see lows around 18°C.
Despite the expected cooling, the forecast indicates continued warm nights, strong trade winds, and high local temperatures, particularly in the southern and south-eastern parts of the archipelago.
