The President of the Lanzarote Business Confederation (CEL), Beatriz Salazar, met with Lanzarote’s Deputy President, María Jesús Tovar, on Monday to discuss advancing the future Congress Palace and the priorities for the island’s business community.
They agreed on the importance of the Congress Palace for economic diversification and boosting opportunities for trade, hospitality, and services. During the meeting, they addressed the challenges facing the project and potential solutions, deciding to reconvene in the coming weeks to assess progress.
Salazar stated, “Lanzarote cannot keep postponing an infrastructure it needs and deserves. Having an auditorium and a Congress Palace means our island can offer more culture, enhance business activity, and create new job opportunities. We have the potential; now we need a firm commitment to make it a reality.”
The discussion also highlighted the difficulties affecting business operations on the island, including rising costs, inflation, and the challenges of double insularity. They stressed the need for tailored support and reducing bureaucracy, particularly concerning building and activity permits to facilitate investment.
Housing shortages and their effects on workforce recruitment and retention were raised, alongside the need for qualified personnel and addressing absenteeism. Both leaders pointed out the importance of preventative measures and social dialogue in finding solutions.
Looking ahead to 2027, they explored challenges such as the adoption of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and training for the required workforce. To assist SMEs in adapting to these changes, Salazar emphasised the need for strengthened public-private collaboration and discussed the potential for forming a coordination group to address needs and support measures.
