Ángel Víctor Torres, Secretary General of the PSOE in the Canary Islands, has announced his candidacy for the presidency of the regional government in the upcoming 2027 elections. He aims to “win the elections again” and lead a new approach to governance.
During a packed event at El Castillo de La Laguna in Tenerife, Torres addressed party members and supporters from across the islands, expressing his eagerness for this new challenge, perhaps even more than during his initial run for presidency. He emphasised the need to move forward in these polarised times, where insults often overshadow reasoned debate.
Torres highlighted the PSOE’s goal of returning to power and implementing different policies. He praised the achievements of the government during the Pacto de las Flores, particularly amid the challenges posed by the pandemic and the eruption of La Palma, insisting that they successfully managed those crises. He pointed out that the current circumstances in the Canary Islands are more favourable due to improved economic resources, yet lamented a “magnificent opportunity” that has been squandered in recent years.
He focused much of his speech on defending public services and addressing social issues currently affecting the islands, notably the housing crisis and the lack of declared stressed areas, despite requests from local authorities. He also critiqued the current coalition of CC and PP for its handling of public universities, early childhood education, healthcare, and social care.
Torres stressed the importance of reducing inequalities and protecting vulnerable groups reliant on public services, citing past efforts during the Pacto de las Flores to lower poverty rates and close the social gap. He concluded his address reaffirming his determination to lead the PSOE back to victory in the elections and reassume the presidency of the Canary Islands.
