The Social Welfare Councillor for Arrecife, Maite Corujo, has highlighted ongoing social issues in the islands, particularly relating to housing and child welfare. Speaking on Crónicas Radio’s “A Buena Hora,” she noted the daily struggles of families, especially cases like “Mari Carmen,” a woman highlighted in recent media for her housing crisis.
Corujo accused the government of exploiting such situations politically, passing urgent housing measures without adequate consensus. She argued that these rushed decisions will not solve a problem that has persisted for years and pointed out the detrimental effects on small landlords facing difficulties with tenants who do not pay rent.
Addressing the stigma surrounding foster care, she urged islanders to consider fostering children. Corujo expressed that many potential foster families are deterred by fears of emotional attachment, but witnessing the benefits of stable homes could change their views.
The conversation also shifted to the recent electoral advancements, where Corujo expressed surprise at the decision to hold early elections amid a turbulent social climate.
When questioned about the tragic death of Mari Carmen, she remarked that while it resonated widely, many housing crises exist across the nation that deserve attention.
Corujo stressed the need for a balanced approach to public policy, advocating for solutions that account for both vulnerable families and property owners facing hardship due to the housing crisis.
On the topic of child welfare, she mentioned that 28 babies were handed over to the community last month under various circumstances, relating this trend to a rise in prostitution and the challenges faced by women in such situations.
Lastly, Corujo confirmed the council’s support for an upcoming charity walk against cancer organised by AFOL, encouraging community participation for a worthy cause.
