Santa Cruz de Tenerife Begins Road Upgrade on Avenida Islas Canarias
Santa Cruz de Tenerife is set to improve its road network with a resurfacing project on Avenida Islas Canarias, a major access route to the capital. The initiative, part of the Urban Boost strategy, has a budget of €269,110.77 and will run from 10 to 31 August, carried out in phases to minimise traffic disruption.
Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez stated the aim is to create a better-prepared city with modern, safe infrastructure that meets present and future needs. He emphasised that this project reflects ongoing efforts to enhance public spaces across all districts.
Carlos Tarife, the First Deputy Mayor and Public Services Councillor, noted that the resurfacing will improve comfort and safety for the many drivers using the route daily. The work will focus on both ascending lanes flanking the tram platform, between Rambla de Santa Cruz and Avenida de Venezuela, to improve pavement conditions and extend the infrastructure’s lifespan.
The project involves removing 9,164 square metres of the existing surface and 1,750 square metres of paving, followed by the application of 1,319 tonnes of asphalt mix. Afterward, all road markings will be completely renewed for optimal driving conditions.
This intervention is part of the municipal Urban Boost plan aimed at systematically renewing the road network to enhance local residents’ quality of life. It is made possible by a framework contract encompassing over 100 roads until 2027, with an investment exceeding €100 million in urban areas by 2030.
Traffic Diversions
To facilitate the works, seven phases will be implemented across the two carriageways, involving round-the-clock road closures and no parking in affected areas, which will be clearly signed. Alternative routes will be established to maintain mobility during the project, with some phases allowing partial lane access.
Phase 1 starts on Monday and covers the stretch up to Calle Obispo Pérez Cáceres, diverting traffic through nearby routes like Avenida de La Asunción and Avenida de Bélgica, with Calle Salamanca closed.
In Phase 2, work will continue on the next section towards the roundabout at Avenida de Bélgica, reopening the first work area and Calle Salamanca.
Phase 3 will focus on the last section near the roundabout, allowing traffic through a temporary half-lane roundabout.
After completing the first carriageway, works will start on the second, organised into four consecutive phases with similar mobility provisions, including access via Calle Zurbarán.
Phase 4 will address the last section on the second carriageway, maintaining a provisional half-lane roundabout to ensure circulation during the final surfacing.
Public Transport Adjustments
Due to the resurfacing on Avenida Islas Canarias, the Titsa Line 904 will temporarily alter its route toward Cuesta Piedra from 7:30 on Monday 10 August until 7:30 on Wednesday 12 August. During this time, buses will divert via Avenida 25 de Julio, Viera y Clavijo, Horacio Nelson, Los Sueños, Domingo J. Manrique, and the Javier del Loño bridge to resume the regular route.
Affected stops—Álvarez de Lugo, Rambla Pulido, and Salamanca—will be replaced with temporary stops at Plaza de los Patos, Sagrado Corazón, and Horacio Nelson.
Further public transport updates will be provided as the work progresses through each phase. Residents are advised to heed the temporary signage and use the alternative routes during the works. The council appreciates the understanding and cooperation of locals and drivers amid the temporary inconveniences necessary for a safer, more comfortable road network.
