Marcos Bergaz, the PSOE spokesperson for Teguise and deputy for Lanzarote and La Graciosa, has expressed hope that the Canary Islands Government will fulfil a commitment to start construction on a new compulsory education centre (CEO) in Costa Teguise during the last quarter of 2026.
The timeline was confirmed by Education Minister Poli Suárez (PP) in a written response on 29 July to a parliamentary question from Bergaz. This comes after a meeting between the two in June to discuss various local issues.
According to the Education Ministry’s response, the tendering for the project is expected to begin in the final quarter of 2026 through an expedited process. However, the formal awarding of the contract depends on the availability of adequate funds in the budget.
Bergaz lamented that a PSOE amendment to ensure funding in the 2026 budget was rejected, which complicates the process. He urged vigilance to secure funding in the 2027 budget: “We missed an opportunity then; now we will closely monitor the situation to ensure financing for the project.”
While Bergaz welcomed the specific timeline for the new educational centre, he reiterated the need to ensure this commitment is fulfilled and that necessary funding is secured. “We expect the Education Department to stick to its schedule and initiate construction by the end of 2026. As the opposition, we will ensure this promise is more than just a plan and turns into reality,” he said.
Bergaz noted that the technical project for the new centre has completed its drafting and review phases, with a favourable report issued on 16 July 2024.
He emphasized that the project was initiated during the previous legislature under former Education Minister Manuela Armas (PSOE), and its drafting was finalised in the current legislature.
Bergaz, who represents both Lanzarote and La Graciosa as well as the local PSOE in Teguise, has reiterated the municipal government’s unanimous backing for this educational infrastructure, essential for growing families in Costa Teguise.
The new CEO will accommodate the increasing population, which now exceeds 9,000 residents, and help ease pressure on existing schools, CEIP Costa Teguise and IES Costa Teguise.
The project plans to establish a centre with 30 educational units, including six for Early Years, twelve for Primary, and twelve for Secondary education. Additional facilities will include a library, school garden, specialised classrooms, sports facilities, leisure areas, and shaded gardens.
The estimated cost for constructing the new CEO Costa Teguise is around €10,150,715.
“Costa Teguise urgently needs this educational facility, and we will continue to advocate for the Canary Islands Government to fulfil its commitments, secure funding, and begin construction in this legislative term,” Bergaz concluded.
