Safety Workshops Launched for Drowning Prevention
Healthcare professionals in Lanzarote are hosting a series of activities and workshops to mark World Drowning Prevention Day. organised by primary care nurses and instructors from the local Health Area, these initiatives aim to educate children and adults about water safety.
Under the title “Preventing Drowning is in Our Hands. Get Informed and Learn. Together We Can Save Lives,” the workshops focus on equipping the public with knowledge to reduce drowning risks in pools, beaches, and other aquatic environments, especially for young children.
On July 27, a workshop for 40 children from summer schools at CEIP Playa Honda took place, with a repeat session scheduled for August 10 at local sports schools in San Bartolomé.
Additionally, a CPR workshop for families was held on July 28 along Playa Honda Avenue. The interactive sessions aim to teach children basic safety practices in the water while also raising awareness among families about the need for constant supervision.
Healthcare professionals stress that prevention starts before entering the water. They emphasise the necessity of constant monitoring of children, particularly in swimming pools where negligence can lead to serious consequences.
Workshops also highlight the importance of respecting safety flags, avoiding swimming under the influence of alcohol, and using life jackets when necessary. Participants are reminded to install barriers to prevent uncontrolled access to water and to create safe spaces for children away from risky areas, always with appropriate supervision.
Training in safe rescue techniques and CPR is deemed vital in emergencies, with professionals encouraging everyone to learn how to swim properly and understand basic water safety to prevent accidents.
The initiative aims to make water safety education accessible to the community, particularly for children, through engaging activities that help identify risky situations and promote safe enjoyment of water activities.
This campaign underscores the commitment of primary care nursing professionals to promote health and safety, reinforcing a crucial message: “Preventing drowning is everyone’s responsibility.” Awareness, vigilance, training, and shared responsibility are essential tools for making summer activities safer.
In case of emergencies, the public is advised to immediately call 112 for assistance.
