TITSA Introduces Double-Decker Buses to Boost Popular Routes
TITSA, Tenerife’s local bus service, is set to introduce double-decker buses on routes 100 and 108 starting this Tuesday. These routes connect Puerto de la Cruz and Icod de los Vinos to the capital, Santa Cruz, transporting around two million passengers annually, according to the Cabildo of Tenerife.
At the launch event on Monday, attended by Rosa Dávila, president of the Cabildo, and mayors Francisco Linares and Javier Sierra, it was revealed that 90% of users on these lines are local residents, rising to 97% for route 108.
The new buses increase capacity significantly, accommodating 85 passengers compared to the previous 59, which means thousands more seats available each year.
Eulalia García, the island’s mobility councillor, indicated that three additional double-decker buses are expected to arrive this week. The Cabildo has also ordered five more, scheduled for delivery in 2027.
These new buses are also in service on the southern motorway (TF-1), specifically on the direct routes 110 and 112, linking Santa Cruz with Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos.
García highlighted that the buses are crafted to meet Tenerife’s unique needs and incorporate advanced safety technology. Features include an alcohol control system, lane departure warnings, and monitoring for cyclists and pedestrians in blind spots.
They are equipped with digital cameras replacing traditional mirrors and seven interior surveillance cameras, ensuring enhanced safety and security for passengers and crews.
This initiative is part of a broader fleet renewal strategy by the Cabildo, which has introduced 351 new vehicles in the last three years, making TITSA one of the most modern bus fleets in Spain, with an average vehicle age of just three years.
Further upgrades will see 57 more buses arriving before the year’s end, including five additional double-decker units, bringing the total to 18.
The investment by the Cabildo exceeds €125 million, leading to a reduction of more than 7% in TITSA’s emissions. This upgrade coincides with a record year for public transport on the island, which surpassed 87 million passengers, the highest figure in its history.
