The Mauritanian Women’s Cultural Association, DIMBE, will host its Intercultural Week from July 22 to 25, promoting coexistence among cultures through lectures, cultural activities, sports, and gastronomy.

The Majorero Council is backing the initiative, stating that it aims to enhance coexistence, respect for diversity, and community participation. Lola García, President of the Fuerteventura Council, emphasised that the island is “open, diverse, and welcoming, where people from various backgrounds come together to create a richer society.” She believes such initiatives foster understanding, respect, and dialogue among cultures.

David de Vera, Mayor of Puerto del Rosario, praised the week as a testament to the cultural diversity of the municipality and the island, highlighting the need for specific activities across cultural, artistic, and sporting areas to reflect the community’s reality.

Hawa Touré, DIMBE’s President, explained that the Intercultural Week addresses the need for spaces that strengthen relationships among the island’s various communities. She described the project as using culture as a tool for integration, learning, and social transformation.

The event will kick off with a lecture titled “Between Two Shores: Mauritania and the Canary Islands, a Bridge of Coexistence, Integration, and Cooperation,” exploring the historical, social, and environmental ties between the two regions.

The programme will also feature activities focused on cultural heritage, youth, and equality, alongside discussions on human rights and the eradication of female genital mutilation. The week will conclude with a sports day celebrating music and gastronomy as means to promote intercultural harmony.

Additional activities will address key social issues, such as cooperation between the Canary Islands and Africa, human rights advocacy, women’s leadership, equality, and the role of youth in building an inclusive society.

Throughout the four days, the programme will include lectures, discussions, musical performances, sports exhibitions, and an intercultural food space highlighting the culinary diversity of the Canary Islands and various African nations. The event will culminate in a meeting between competitors in Canarian wrestling and traditional Senegalese wrestling, symbolising dialogue between cultures through sport and shared values.
