New Dental Unit Launched to Support Patients with Special Needs in Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura’s Health Area, part of the Canarian Health Service (SCS), has launched a new Dental Unit aimed at enhancing oral care for people with special needs on the island.
The initiative has been met with gratitude from local families. Mirta Cappellini, the mother of a patient with disabilities, expressed her thanks for the care her son received. She stated that, during a procedure on Thursday, 30 July, at the Virgen de la Peña Hospital in Puerto del Rosario, the Dental Service team—led by Dr Juan Francisco Rodríguez Mulero and Dr Estefanía Guillén—provided exceptional support.
Cappellini’s letter highlighted the importance of the unit, noting it offers valuable services for those unable to visit traditional dental clinics due to their conditions.
The new dental service operates on a rotating schedule between the General Hospital of Fuerteventura, supported by General Surgery, and three health centres. This arrangement aims to make dental care more accessible across the island.
Specialised care is a key focus for patients with intellectual disabilities or severe behavioural issues. The new unit permits treatment under sedation or general anaesthesia when necessary, especially when standard methods prove impractical.
Beneficiaries include individuals with an intellectual disability of 33% or more, whose dependency hampers their ability to manage oral health. Additionally, patients with significant behavioural challenges will receive tailored care, ensuring safe dental treatment in accordance with established protocols between primary and hospital care teams.
