This project, essential for improving the region’s water cycle and sanitation system, requires an investment exceeding €5 million, with €2.5 million dependent on state funds.

Adargoma Hernández, a council member, has urged the Spanish government to approve the grant, which is intended for the Canarian government, which will then allocate it to the local council. This funding is critical for implementing a key initiative within Fuerteventura’s Island Hydrological Plan, enabling the facility to treat 600 cubic metres of wastewater per day.

Hernández highlighted the urgency during the Water Roundtable of the Canary Islands, attended by representatives from the Canarian government and other local authorities to discuss essential projects for various hydrographic areas.

The meeting also emphasised the need to activate the Water Works Agreement between the regional and national governments, essential for advancing public-interest projects related to desalination, water reuse, and other hydraulic activities deemed important by the Canarian government.
