Hispania Nostra has officially accepted the request from the heritage association El Efequén to include the Casa de la Cueva de la Negra in Fuerteventura on its Red List of threatened heritage sites. This list highlights cultural properties at risk of disappearance, destruction, or loss of their heritage values.
El Efequén submitted this request after asking the Cabildo of Fuerteventura to start the process to declare the building a Cultural Heritage Asset. The association is currently awaiting a response from the island’s authorities regarding this declaration.
Hispania Nostra, a non-profit organisation recognised as being of public benefit, focuses on promoting and protecting cultural and natural heritage. Its goals include encouraging public participation in the conservation of heritage sites and promoting their awareness and enjoyment. The organisation runs monitoring programmes for threatened heritage and fosters collaboration between public and private institutions.
The purpose of the Red List is to catalogue elements of Spanish heritage that face threats of disappearance, destruction, or significant alteration, aiming to raise awareness and promote their preservation or restoration.
While El Efequén has received confirmation from Hispania Nostra regarding the Casa de la Cueva de la Negra, it awaits further communication from the Cabildo of Fuerteventura concerning its request for cultural asset designation.
