Juntos por Lanzarote (JPL) has announced it will not take part in any electoral coalitions for the upcoming general elections on 29 November. This decision follows discussions with various political parties across the Canary Islands.
The municipalist federation believes that while dialogue and finding common ground are important, now is not the right time to engage in electoral agreements that could distract from its main goal: to establish a political project rooted in Lanzarote and La Graciosa for the benefit of local residents.
JPL reaffirmed its commitment to Canary Islanders and stressed the need for a strong and independent representation in the Spanish Parliament to defend the archipelago’s interests against the major national parties.
The party highlighted that Lanzarote and La Graciosa face “double insularity,” which often goes unaddressed, even within local institutions. JPL insists that any project aimed at Canary Island unity must prioritize territorial balance and ensure that the voices of smaller islands are genuinely heard in political decisions.
“Defending the Canaries also means defending Lanzarote and La Graciosa, and we cannot speak of true Canary Island unity while the needs of our island remain sidelined,” stated Jerónimo Robayna, JPL’s president.
As a municipalist federation, JPL respects the autonomy and identity of its member organisations. Accordingly, for the general elections, it will respect the voting freedom of its members without endorsing specific candidates.
JPL emphasizes that this decision does not close the door to dialogue or undermine the choices of other municipalist groups. “Our project is not aimed at occupying a temporary space in these elections but at creating a lasting political alternative that prioritises the interests of Lanzarote and La Graciosa above all,” Robayna added.
Looking ahead, Juntos por Lanzarote is focused on the municipal and island elections in 2027, intending to strengthen its structure and build a common project that respects the autonomy of various municipalist parties. “Our priority is Lanzarote and La Graciosa. That is our commitment, and that is where we will concentrate our efforts,” Robayna concluded.
