Arrecife Revitalises Local Market with ‘Qué Bien Me Sabe’ Initiative
The Arrecife Town Council has launched the ‘Qué Bien Me Sabe Arrecife’ initiative to enhance the city’s Traditional Market, local hospitality, and commerce. Mayor Yonathan de León and Councillor for Commerce and Tourism, Eli Merino, aim to boost the historic area through strategic actions this autumn and winter.
The first phase of this initiative occurred over the summer, focusing on the revitalised Las Palmas square, which hosts the Traditional Market every Saturday. This market promotes direct sales of local produce and seafood.
Plans include increasing activities at the Traditional Market in line with the recent successes seen during the summer. De León and Merino aim to establish ‘Qué Bien Me Sabe Arrecife’ as a brand representing local products and cuisine. Future efforts will involve the reopening of La Pescadería Municipal and La Recova Municipal, which are set to house a market space and dining area.
During the initiative’s launch event, de León expressed optimism that visiting the market will become a common family activity in Arrecife, contributing to a vibrant historic centre.
Merino acknowledged the perseverance of local entrepreneurs amid changing economic challenges, highlighting their significance to the local economy. A range of these professionals participated in the promotional materials for ‘Qué Bien Me Sabe Arrecife’.
Nori Machín, the Economic Promotion Councillor for Lanzarote, emphasised the necessity of such initiatives to boost the local economy and uphold the island’s gastronomic identity. The Cabildo supports the project with over €560,000, reflecting a commitment to promoting local commerce and preserving Lanzarote’s unique values.
