Lanzarote Summer Challenge Attracts Record Participation
The twelfth Lanzarote Summer Challenge kicked off in the island’s capital, bringing together 200 competitors for the most international and competitive edition yet. This event, a highlight in Spain and Europe’s CrossFit scene, pushed athletes to their limits with tests of endurance, speed, strength, and balance. This year’s competition also introduced a kayak segment, with athletes navigating a challenging course in front of enthusiastic crowds.
In the top RX category, pre-favourite teams dominated the day. Competitors Helena Carratalá and Fabi Beneito, both notable Spanish athletes, led the rankings, closely followed by Marina Ríos and Manu Melguizo in a nail-biting contest.
The competition commenced at El Islote de Fermina with a 500-metre kayak row, testing the athletes’ strength. Following this, they faced two intense strength challenges: lifting weights of up to 32 kilograms overhead and performing 50 box jumps with that same weight. The Master category teams of Jeremías Lasso and Andrea Beautell, alongside Jorge Hernández and Mihaela Letitia Veltan, made a significant impact with the highest number of repetitions.
Spectators filled the stands at Marina Lanzarote Puerto Deportivo, cheering on competitors as they tackled a demanding ski simulator and lifted 60-kilogram bars overhead. The day’s most impressive result came from Hernández and Veltan, who achieved 279 repetitions in a series of pull-ups.
The organisers planned another thrilling challenge for the final segments of the day, where athletes aimed to balance as much weight as possible overhead, underlining the electric atmosphere with every kilogram added.
Today’s activities resume at 9:00 am at the beautiful El Reducto beach, where finalists will be decided. The much-anticipated finals for all categories will commence at 3:45 pm at Marina Lanzarote Puerto Deportivo. Entry is free until capacity is reached, ensuring everyone can witness the action.
