A group of residents from Los Realejos will embark on a charitable walk this Sunday to honour the Virgin of Carmen. Starting at 8:30 AM from La Cartaya Square, they will make their way to three chapels in Puerto de la Cruz: Cruz Santa, San Agustín, and Puerto de la Cruz itself.
This initiative, which began informally in 2017, has grown significantly over the years. Initially, a small group of friends walked about eight kilometres to pay tribute to the Virgin, sharing drinks and tapas along the way. With support from Loro Parque, which provided T-shirts, the event gained momentum and began raising funds for good causes.
In 2019, the walk’s scope expanded when Emilio García from the Achimensey association connected with Dionisio Rodríguez of the Jeriguilla association in Puerto de la Cruz. They decided to make it a fundraiser, with proceeds going to childhood cancer research that year. After a pause during the pandemic, the walk resumed in 2022, contributing to relief efforts for victims of the La Palma volcanic eruption.
This year, funds from the walk will benefit Visión Azul Autismo, a non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting families with children on the autism spectrum (TEA). They provide training and create supportive environments through workshops and awareness campaigns.
Participants will receive a T-shirt for a donation of €5, with the option to contribute more. A bus will be provided for older individuals or those with mobility difficulties.
The day will end at Costa Martiánez Tourist Complex, where a large paella will be served, celebrating a growing event for a worthy cause. Organisers plan to expand the walk next year to include La Orotava, aiming to represent the entire valley.
