Investigation Looms Over Former Lanzarote Medical Contracts
David Monte, Head of President’s Office at Lanzarote’s Cabildo, has stated that María Dolores Corujo will need to provide substantial explanations regarding her report on Juan Manuel Sosa’s contract, which allegedly misrepresents key information. The Arrecife prosecutor’s office is probing potential criminal activity, including public fund misappropriation, document falsification, and fraud.
Monte expressed concern that, although Corujo’s supporters in the PSOE assume the case would be dismissed, past precedents, such as the conviction of José Luis Ábalos, suggest this outcome is uncertain. He emphasised the importance of protecting the Cabildo from bearing any financial burden related to Sosa’s alleged misconduct, amounting to €300,000.
Responding to PSOE criticisms that he is targeting Corujo, Monte clarified he is merely fulfilling his duty to oversee the Cabildo’s interests. He noted that the rapidity of a recent PSOE press release showed a lack of careful consideration, as it has since been proven inaccurate.
The prosecutor’s report suggests that Corujo’s position as a representative shields her from direct accusations, and further investigation will be escalated to the Supreme Prosecutor’s office. Monte insisted the evidence points towards Corujo’s potential wrongdoing, stating that the prosecutor’s investigation supports this conclusion, regardless of PSOE assertions.
As this case unfolds, the implications extend beyond Corujo, potentially implicating officials from the Canary Islands government who facilitated Sosa’s continued payments. Monte urged for deeper scrutiny into the administrative processes that allowed Sosa to remain in his position without legal justification, a situation he described as alarmingly interconnected.
