Canary Islands Government Issues Heat Alert for All Islands
The Canary Islands Government has declared a heat alert for all islands, effective from 12:00 today, 6 July. This decision follows the latest meteorological assessments and activates the Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA).
The alert covers the entire Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands. A warm, dry air mass from Africa is intensifying the ongoing heatwave, particularly impacting the mountainous regions and interiors of the eastern islands. Although there may be some dust intrusion, significant surface levels of dust are not expected.
Temperatures are projected to remain high until at least Friday, with some areas experiencing temperatures above 37°C today, especially in the higher regions of western and southern Gran Canaria, where peaks could reach 40°C.
By Tuesday and Wednesday, temperatures in northern Gran Canaria and areas of Fuerteventura could also hit 36°C. In Lanzarote and La Graciosa, highs of 34°C to 36°C are expected in many inland areas. Tenerife will likely see temperatures exceeding 34°C in southern and western regions, potentially reaching 38°C in certain areas on Tuesday and Wednesday.
In La Gomera, highs of 34°C are anticipated today, with temperatures possibly escalating to 38°C in the eastern parts. El Hierro and La Palma will experience slightly cooler conditions, yet temperatures may exceed 32°C in their mountainous regions.
Northern coasts and the western coast of the eastern islands will enjoy slightly better conditions, with a layer of humid, cool maritime air. Night-time temperatures will also remain unusually high, especially in southern and western mountainous areas, affecting rest and thermal recovery.
Given the projected heatwave duration, authorities will closely monitor the situation and may escalate the alert level based on updated forecasts. Residents are advised to follow guidance from the General Directorate of Emergencies for self-protection during this period.
