Heat Warning Issued for Canary Islands
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a heat warning for the Canary Islands on Monday, 6 July 2026, predicting significant temperature increases across the region. Inland and mid-altitude areas, especially in Gran Canaria, are expected to reach highs of 37°C, while Tenerife may see temperatures of up to 34°C.
Most of the islands will experience clear skies, although some light haze could occur at higher elevations. Temperature rises will be particularly noticeable away from coastal areas, with more gradual changes along the northern, western, and southern coasts.
In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, temperatures are likely to peak at around 25°C, while El Hierro will record the lowest at about 19°C.
Areas Most Affected by Heat
The warm air mass will not affect all parts of the archipelago equally. The highest readings will be inland, particularly in the Tejeda basin and mid-altitude areas in Gran Canaria, where temperatures could also hit 37°C.
Overnight, inland parts of Gran Canaria may experience tropical nights, with minimum temperatures remaining above 26°C to 27°C, potentially causing discomfort in homes lacking adequate ventilation.
In Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, clear skies will dominate, although the western coasts may see some clouds in the early morning and late evening.
In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, temperatures will peak in the mid-altitude regions, south, east, and metropolitan areas of Tenerife, reaching around 34°C. In the north and eastern coasts, temperatures may exceed 30°C in a more localised manner.
Moderate Winds with Strong Gusts
Winds will follow the typical summer pattern, blowing from the north at moderate strength throughout much of the islands. However, strong gusts are anticipated in exposed areas, particularly in the north-eastern and south-western parts of the western islands.
In Gran Canaria, the north wind will be more pronounced, especially at the eastern and western edges, with the possibility of very strong gusts. Winds will be lighter on mountain peaks and will blow from the south-west in Tenerife.
Overall, Monday is set to bring another sweltering day to the Canary Islands, particularly in inland and mid-altitude areas, with Gran Canaria likely to experience the highest temperatures. Aemet cautions that warm nights in the most affected areas may provide little relief after sunset.
