The Arrecife City Council is set to invest nearly €500,000 in the renovation of the historic Municipal Fish Market, which aims to revitalise the city’s commercial and culinary scene alongside La Recova.
The renovation project was announced on 1 July and is now open for bids until 22 July 2026. The work will modernise the building, transforming it into a space for selling seafood, with an additional area dedicated to food preparation and tasting.
Mayor Yonathan de León emphasised that this initiative is part of a broader strategy to restore key public buildings in the city centre to their former commercial significance. The revamped Fish Market will supplement the ongoing rehabilitation of La Recova, together forming a new marketplace for Lanzarote and La Graciosa products.
De León highlighted collaboration with the Canary Islands Tourism Department, led by Jéssica de León. The bidding process has been initiated by the Project and Tourism Study Management Company of the Canary Islands.
Eli Merino, the councillor for Commerce and Tourism, noted that the renovation plan has been approved by the Heritage Unit of the Lanzarote Council, as the building is located near the historic centre, close to San Ginés Church and La Recova.
Merino added that the project aims to create a modern space focused on seafood sales and tastings, with necessary authorisations already in place. This renovation is part of a larger municipal effort to revitalise the historic centre.
Other ongoing or planned improvements in the area include the total refurbishment of Plaza de Las Palmas, enhancements to the façades of the parish hall and library, as well as upcoming works on La Recova and the comprehensive renovation of José Ramírez Cerdá Park, which is expected to cost around €2 million.
The council believes these developments will enhance Arrecife’s role as a hub for commerce, leisure, and gastronomy, particularly in the strategic area near the Charco de San Ginés, which attracts both residents and tourists.
The new layouts for the Fish Market and La Recova aim to establish a shopping and dining circuit focused on local produce, supporting Lanzarote and La Graciosa’s agricultural and fishing sectors while creating new opportunities for local businesses.
