La Laguna Council Backs Student Electric Vehicle Project with €12,000 Grant
La Laguna Council has partnered with the Fundación General de la Universidad de La Laguna (FGULL) to support the latest edition of the Fórmula Student project. This initiative enables university students to design, develop, and build a competitive electric vehicle as part of their practical education.
The agreement was signed by La Laguna’s Mayor, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, and FGULL’s manager, Julio Brito, with the council’s Education and Youth councillor, Sergio Eiroa, also present. The council is contributing €12,000 to cover essential technical components and specialised equipment needed for the development of the prototype and its entry into university competitions.
Mayor Gutiérrez highlighted the council’s dedication to fostering local talent and supporting projects that integrate knowledge, research, and innovation. He stated, “La Laguna hosts a prestigious university, and we aim to strengthen our collaboration to offer students more opportunities to apply their learning in real-world projects that promote technological development and sustainable mobility.”
Councillor Eiroa noted that this partnership allows students to enhance their academic experience with practical skills, working as a team and facing challenges similar to those in their future careers. He emphasised that Fórmula Student embodies a learning approach centred on innovation, effort, and problem-solving, values the council seeks to promote through initiatives connecting education with market needs.
The project targets undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students from various engineering and science disciplines at the university, who collaborate to design and refine an electric single-seater for international university competitions.
The council’s funding will assist in procuring materials, electronic systems, mechanical components, and the essential technical equipment necessary to meet the specifications of the competitions in which the team participates.
Through this initiative, La Laguna Council reaffirms its commitment to quality education linked to innovation, technological advancement, and sustainability, promoting collaboration between local government and the Universidad de La Laguna to create opportunities for students and provide broader societal benefits.
