The construction of a cycle path in El Médano has sparked controversy in Granadilla de Abona, leading to both protests and public support. This debate has intensified with the emergence of a local movement advocating for a cycle corridor that would connect coastal areas.
The group “Granadilla por la Bici” defended their position to DIARIO DE AVISOS, arguing that the needs of local residents can be accommodated. This grassroots movement demonstrated on Sunday, primarily focusing on the demand for a green corridor, about six kilometres long, along the TF-643 road. This route would link El Médano, La Tejita, and Los Abrigos, designed for bicycles, skating, walking, or running.
Javier Eköoké, a spokesperson for the group, argued that their proposal would not eliminate any parking spaces, as it would run between populated areas instead of through town centres. “Every bike ride eases pressure on congested areas,” he explained. To further their cause, the group plans to cycle along the proposed route on the first Sunday of each month.
Meanwhile, the El Médano Neighbourhood Council held a demonstration in May, calling for the suspension of the current construction due to concerns about its location, design, and the potential loss of nearby parking spaces.
Mariely Casanova, president of the participation body, highlighted that the main grievance is the loss of parking in an area that has struggled with a chronic shortage for years, exacerbated by heavy tourist traffic. Regarding the proposed corridor linking Los Abrigos to El Médano, she noted that while there is no opposition to it, the project seems to serve as a “way for the local council to alleviate the tension in El Médano.”
### Los Abrigos to El Médano, No Timetable
Public Works Councillor, Marcos Antonio Rodríguez Santana (PP), announced that the project to connect Los Abrigos and El Médano is still in the drafting stage, supported by the Cabildo’s Tourism department. The basic project details will soon be provided.
Funding would involve both municipal and Cabildo sources, but actual construction will depend on the outcome of pending compulsory land acquisitions. The new stretch will connect with the existing cycle path in El Médano, which currently ends at Galván Bello Street, and extend towards Tenerife Street, linking to the coastal corridor. Rodríguez confirmed that this project is unlikely to be completed during the current council term.
