Significant Drop in Holiday Rentals in Lanzarote
The number of holiday rentals in Lanzarote has fallen sharply over the past year. According to data from the Lanzarote Cabildo’s Data Centre, the island’s holiday properties have decreased from 7,925 in May 2025 to 6,373 in May 2026—a drop of 1,552 rentals, representing nearly a 20% decline.
The reduction also affects the number of available rental spaces. There were 36,104 spaces associated with holiday properties in May of last year, but now that number stands at 28,662—a loss of 7,442 spaces in just twelve months.
This downward trend has continued into 2026. The year began with 6,990 registered holiday rentals in January, but this number has steadily declined to 6,373 by May, marking the lowest level in several years and significantly lower than the peaks seen in 2024 and 2025.
All tourist municipalities on the island are feeling the impact, particularly Tías, Teguise, and Yaiza, which host the bulk of holiday rentals. The decrease aligns with new regional regulations and growing public debate regarding the effect of holiday homes on residential housing availability.
This decline is particularly notable compared to previous years, when the market saw substantial growth. Between 2023 and 2025, holiday rentals surged, reaching historical highs of over 8,000 properties and more than 38,000 available spaces in certain months of 2024.
Despite the recent downturn, holiday rentals still account for a significant portion of Lanzarote’s accommodation capacity and remain a major component of the island’s tourist offerings.
