Water supply issues continue to plague residents in several areas of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, particularly in the upper floors of buildings in neighborhoods like Cruz del Señor, Los Gladiolos, and Alcalde Mandillo Tejera. Despite a slight increase in water pressure recently, it remains inadequate for essential needs, such as accessing hot water or operating washing machines, according to resident Domingo Valera Guimerá.
Many residents have struggled with these water supply problems since June, with some experiencing sudden shortages starting in August. Valera noted a minor improvement in pressure after weeks of no flow but still has to rely on bottled water and small storage tanks. He faces difficulties heating water for bathing and is stuck paying bills to Emmasa, the local water utility.
Valera estimates that around 100 households in his area face similar issues, with the utility company attributing the problems to reduced pressure but offering no substantial solutions.
The ongoing crisis affects vulnerable populations, including the elderly and families in buildings that lack water storage tanks, leaving them without a reliable backup. Valera expressed doubts about a temporary solution using tanks, as those living on the higher floors would remain disadvantaged due to their inability to refill the tanks.
Residents are calling for urgent action to resolve this critical service issue, especially during the peak summer months. Protests have been held, with residents demanding interventions from the council and the water company. Some have even taken legal action in pursuit of a resolution.
Attempts to contact the city’s Services Councillor, Carlos Tarife, went unanswered, although municipal sources indicated he had previously commented on water issues affecting other neighbourhoods, suggesting that a resolution was underway for those specific problems.
