Nearly sixty organisations have rallied together for a demonstration in the Canary Islands this Saturday, 26th September, advocating for real democracy. The movement has gathered more than 10,000 signatures on its manifesto.
The organisers highlight that defending democracy encompasses a wide range of issues, including public healthcare, education, decent employment, housing rights, environmental protection, social services, and equality. They also stand firmly against racism, xenophobia, and hate speech.
The manifesto, which can be signed via email at [email protected], calls for the restoration of trust in “the common good” and demands that essential rights, such as housing, employment, and care, be secured amid current political threats.
Promoters have condemned a systematic erosion of fundamental rights, asserting that the present situation reflects a withdrawal of rights rather than explicit prohibitions. They describe the struggle for a dignified life as an exhausting administrative and personal challenge.
Criticism is directed at the prevailing model prioritising economic interests over human dignity, disproportionately affecting vulnerable groups, including women, low-income individuals, migrants, people of colour, transgender individuals, and the elderly.
The movement particularly underscores the precarious conditions in the Canary Islands, where issues like the housing crisis, job instability, and bureaucratic hurdles hinder many residents from achieving stable lives.
Demonstrations will take place across the islands at 12:00, with the following rally points:
– Lanzarote: Arrecife, Old Cabildo
– Fuerteventura: Puerto del Rosario, outside the Government Delegation
– La Palma: Los Llanos de Aridane, Plaza de España
– Tenerife: From Plaza Weyler to Plaza del Príncipe
– Gran Canaria: From the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium to Santa Catalina Park
