Vibrant Celebrations as the Virgen del Carmen Procession Takes to the Sea
Hundreds gathered on Sunday, 26 July, in Punta del Hidalgo to take part in the traditional Virgen del Carmen procession. This event, closely tied to the local fishing community, featured a lively parade both on land and at sea along the coast.
The official festivities kicked off at 6:00 PM with a religious ceremony. Following the mass, attendees walked from the Olga Ramos Square to the harbour, where the statue of the Virgen was placed on a boat. This moment was marked by a moving rendition of the Ave María, performed by soloist Miriam Reyes and guest artist Nayra González.
As the maritime journey set off towards the coastal areas of Bajamar and Jóver, singer Chago Melian entertained those remaining on shore in Punta del Hidalgo.
Local leaders were present, including the Mayor of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, and the Councillor for Festivities, Dailos González. The mayor described the celebration as a tribute to generations reliant on the sea, emphasising its role in preserving collective memory and cultural identity. Councillor González praised the community’s involvement and the dedication of volunteers, noting the presence of beautifully decorated boats accompanying the statue.
The event wrapped up as spectators awaited the return of the Virgen del Carmen at the harbour, following which festivities concluded with cultural performances and a fireworks display.
