Tenerife’s local government has allocated €150,000 to support breeding associations in their efforts to recover and improve indigenous livestock breeds.
Valentín González, the local councillor for Primary Sector, emphasised that this financial assistance aims to bolster the vital work done by these organisations in preserving the island’s biodiversity and genetic heritage.
The funding will benefit four representative groups in the primary sector: the Asociación Nacional de Criadores de Cabra Tinerfeña, the Asociación Canaria de Arrastre, Fomento y Crianza de Ganado, the Asociación de Criadores de Cochino Negro de Canarias, and the Asociación de Criadores de Ovino Canario de Pelo. These initiatives focus on protecting and promoting traditional breeds that are deeply intertwined with the rural culture and economy of Tenerife.
González stated that this funding is a strategic pillar for the primary sector and effective land management, highlighting the specialised work of these breeding associations. He also noted that initiatives like this are intended to provide resources that support generational change and enhance the profitability of livestock farming.
