The Teguise Town Council has announced that a solemn mass was held in honour of Our Lady of the Snows, the historical patroness of Lanzarote, attracting hundreds of locals and visitors to the chapel, a significant religious and heritage site in the municipality.
The service, led by church authorities, was attended by various officials and highlighted the tradition and devotion that each year marks this event, regarded as one of the key celebrations in Teguise’s festive calendar.
Mayor Olivia Duque remarked that this celebration “is an essential part of our identity as a community, uniting generations of Lanzarote residents and preserving our historical, cultural, and religious legacy.”
Cultural and Festivities Councillor Andoni Machín expressed gratitude for the attendance and understanding shown towards the cancellation of the procession. “The safety of attendees and the preservation of heritage are always priorities. The enthusiasm and participation demonstrated the deep-rooted connection this celebration has with the community,” he stated.
Due to strong winds, the traditional procession with the image of Our Lady of the Snows had to be cancelled for safety reasons. However, the religious event proceeded as planned, maintaining the spirit of the occasion that gathers worshippers from across the island each 5th of August.
Following the mass, Teguise resident Oliver Martín recited a heartfelt poem dedicated to the Virgin and attendees, as is customary. Later, the image was brought outside where the Teguise music band, Teguiband, paid tribute to the patroness with music before the image was returned to the chapel.
The Teguise Town Council extended its thanks to the Lanzarote Cabildo for their collaboration and coordination throughout the various events held in honour of Our Lady of the Snows, as well as to the security services, volunteers, and municipal staff who ensured the smooth running of the celebrations. The Council also appreciated the exemplary conduct of attendees, which helped preserve the spirit of the tradition despite the procession’s cancellation for safety concerns.
