Canary Islands Officials Present New Sports Initiatives in Lanzarote
The Canary Islands’ government recently introduced two major sports initiatives, ACTIVÍDATE and GANAR, during a meeting held at the Cabildo de Lanzarote, attended by local officials. The session, chaired by Juan Monzón, the island’s councillor for Physical Activity and Sports, aimed to enhance cooperation between the Cabildo and the seven municipalities of Lanzarote.
Ángel Sabroso, Deputy Minister for Physical Activity and Sports, explained that ACTIVÍDATE encourages physical activity and strengthens the links between healthcare and sports. He noted that GPs can now prescribe exercise directly to patients, who will then receive tailored exercise programmes from fitness professionals. Sabroso claimed this initiative marks a significant advancement in promoting healthier lifestyles across the Canary Islands.
María Rojas, Director General of Physical Activity and Sports, added that GANAR aims to create safe and welcoming spaces for sports participation. She emphasised Lanzarote’s reputation as a sporting hub and highlighted the importance of instilling values of respect and responsibility among young athletes, alongside offering educational sessions for families.
Monzón expressed gratitude for the government officials’ engagement, calling both projects vital for the communities of Lanzarote and La Graciosa. He stressed that these initiatives would significantly boost physical activity and sport island-wide.
The meeting concluded with plans for a follow-up discussion in the coming weeks to address further sporting matters, including the upcoming Insular Sports Fair scheduled for October in the island’s capital. Monzón reiterated the importance of coordinated efforts between municipalities to ensure the success of sporting events throughout the year.
