The Santa Cruz de Tenerife Council is pressing ahead with plans to restore Benijo beach in Anaga. This follows the General Directorate of Coasts of the Canary Islands confirming that the proposed works are deemed emergency actions, despite a negative report from the State’s Coast authorities.
Antonio Acosta, the General Director of Coasts, shared this update during a meeting with Santa Cruz Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez. The meeting focused on the project’s administrative progress, according to a council statement on Saturday.
The Canarian Coast authorities’ decision allows the council to advance with the necessary procedures without requiring an initial administrative concession, the council stated. Bermúdez highlighted that various administrations have been working together to expedite the processes and believes this decision brings them closer to starting the works as soon as possible.
He also reaffirmed the council’s commitment to the Anaga community and the beach’s recovery, which has been closed since July 2024, emphasising that public safety is the top priority. The planned restoration is crucial for stabilising the slope next to the popular swimming area.
Carlos Tarife, the First Deputy Mayor and Public Services Councillor, called the Coast authorities’ decision a significant technical and administrative advancement that ensures legal security for the process.
The council aims to initiate the works as swiftly as possible, ensuring all necessary technical and legal guarantees are in place. Benijo beach has been closed since July 2024, when the council mandated a precautionary closure due to falling rocks from the adjacent slope, some of which obstructed the sole access route to the beach.
