The upcoming festivities in Puerto del Carmen will feature a dedicated support space, known as the Punto Violeta, aimed at tackling sexual violence and aggression. This initiative will be in place over the next two weekends at the Varadero square.
The Punto Violeta will operate on the nights of Friday, 31 July, and Saturday, 1 and 8 August, from 11pm to 4am. Supported by Tías Council and managed by the Mararía association, the space will include a psychologist, a legal expert, and a support advisor.
Tías Mayor, José Juan Cruz, and Deputy Mayor and Equality Councillor, Nicolás Saavedra, emphasised the service’s role in raising awareness and providing support during large events. The aim is to protect potential victims, prevent harassment, and promote safety in public spaces.
“Everyone deserves to enjoy public spaces safely,” Saavedra remarked, noting the generally good behaviour of festival-goers. He also highlighted that violence can take many forms, including verbal and physical aggression.
The Punto Violeta will offer assistance to anyone feeling harassed or threatened. Past events saw young people aged 15 to 17 make up nearly 90% of those using the service. In addition to addressing issues of violence, staff will provide information on sexual health and distribute condoms. Most users in previous years were young residents from various locations across Lanzarote.
