Podemos Canarias has rejected statements made by Arrecife Mayor Yonathan de León, who urged the Spanish government to send migrants arriving on Lanzarote to Morocco.
Miguel López, the party’s secretary for migration and anti-racism, described the mayor’s comments as detrimental, stating that characterising vulnerable individuals as part of an “invasion” fuels fear and hostility towards migrants.
López emphasised that those reaching the Canary Islands after perilous journeys deserve humane treatment that prioritises their rights and safety, rather than being politicised. He expressed concern that the mayor’s proposal overlooks the individual circumstances and rights of each migrant.
The party believes the solution to the migration situation in the Canaries should involve enhancing reception resources, international cooperation, and establishing safe legal pathways, instead of subjecting individuals to the risks posed by human traffickers.
López highlighted the need for policies that prevent dangerous crossings rather than merely deciding where to return rescued individuals. He called on leaders to shift away from viewing migration as a threat and instead address the complex reality responsibly, with public resources and respect for human rights.
“Canarias knows all too well the meaning of emigration. We do not need leaders looking for enemies among those who arrive exhausted on our shores. We need policies that protect lives and solutions worthy of a border territory like ours,” he concluded.
