Lanzarote’s wine industry will receive extraordinary support to mitigate losses caused by the severe drought during the 2025 harvest, one of the worst in decades.
The announcement came from Narvay Quintero, the Canarian Minister for Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty, during a regional parliamentary session. This follows a request from local MP and Cabildo President Oswaldo Betancort.
Betancort highlighted that the harvest saw a nearly 67% reduction, preventing many grape growers from meeting the minimum production thresholds required for certain aid schemes. He also emphasised the uniqueness of La Geria’s agricultural model, a significant emblem of Canarian identity.
In response, the government has introduced a dedicated drought aid package worth €2.8 million. It will also provide funding for the maintenance of traditional cultivation pits specific to La Geria.
Betancort welcomed this commitment, stressing the importance of supporting this strategic sector for both the economy and the local landscape. He also pointed out the need to involve young farmers in viticulture to ensure generational continuity and maintain this distinctive agricultural model.
