The Public Works Councillor of Lanzarote’s Cabildo, Jacobo Medina, has refuted claims of his inactivity following remarks made on Crónicas Radio’s show “A Buena Hora.” Responding to gossip suggesting he doesn’t fulfil his role, Medina emphasised that anyone making such comments should consider the positive results reflected in recent surveys about his performance. He asserted that if he were Cabildo president and a councillor wasn’t performing, he would dismiss them immediately.
Medina clarified that he is working closely with Arrecife’s Mayor, Yonathan de León, in their shared public works responsibilities, and that both citizens and political parties should take pride in this collaboration. Although he does not currently have communication with Astrid Pérez, the local party leader, he expressed a desire to lead the PP’s list for the Cabildo again, reaffirming his loyalty to the party.
Responding to rumours about council tensions, he firmly denied any claims of being idle or non-communicative, highlighting his ongoing projects, including improvements to public infrastructure. He mentioned various works underway, like the new residence for the elderly and significant enhancements to Lanzarote’s airport and road systems, and dismissed the notion that he is not visible in his office, stating he prefers to engage with the community.
When asked about internal party politics, Medina noted the need for a PP congress, which has been overdue since 2021. He acknowledged the criticism surrounding party leadership but affirmed that he stands by his previous support for Pérez.
Regarding recent governmental dynamics, he expressed frustration about the perception of him collaborating independently with de León for electoral purposes, insisting that their joint work is essential due to their respective roles.
Medina also commented on the broader political scene, mentioning that he is focused on delivering for Lanzarote. He called for greater accountability in the council and a unified effort to serve the local populace effectively, while dismissing any personal attacks that detract from their objectives.
He concluded by expressing disbelief at recent actions taken by the PSOE regarding investigations into their council, labelling them as politically motivated attempts to undermine a well-regarded municipal leader.
