Huvermann Clinches Major Win at Fuerteventura Windsurfing World Championships
Maaike Huvermann from the Netherlands shocked the windsailing world by defeating Aruba’s Sarah-Quita Offringa by half a point in the single elimination final at the 38th Fuerteventura World Windsurfing Championships. This marked Offringa’s first loss in a final here since 2006, where she had previously won every edition.
In the women’s quarter-finals, Huvermann and Offringa advanced alongside Lisa Kloster and Sandra Schill. Kloster triumphed over Bianca Sottile from Italy with 18.4 points, while Huvermann defeated Isabel van Noesel 28.9 to 4.9. Schill eliminated Austria’s Lina Schmied 8.8 to 6.5, and Offringa scored 33.4 points against Germany’s Helena Derya Lale, who managed only 4.7.
In the semi-finals, Kloster took an early lead over Huvermann but the Dutch competitor surged ahead in the closing moments, securing her place in the final with 29.1 points to Kloster’s 20.7. Offringa, on the other hand, demolished Schill with an impressive 32.5 points.
Kloster later ensured third place in the B final against Schill, keeping control throughout and scoring 14.9 points against Schill’s attempts.
The women’s final had Huvermann starting strong with a regular kono, shaka, and culo. Offringa stumbled initially but recovered with a spock into culo, and a forward loop. However, Huvermann’s consistent performance, including a burner and a spock into culo, clinched her the victory by just half a point.
In the men’s category, Balz Müller from Switzerland secured the highest score of the quarters, defeating Jacopo Testa of Italy with 45.42 points to Testa’s 40.6. Lennart Neubauer from Greece narrowly beat Dieter Van der Eyken of Belgium, 41.2 to 37.3. Takumi Moriya edged out Steven Van Broeckhoven in the closest contest, winning 30 to 29.5.
The first men’s semi-final saw Neubauer advance past Müller, who also qualified for the final. Moriya and Caers battled it out in the second semi, with Caers ultimately claiming his spot in the final as well.
After an interrupted B final match, Müller finished third while Moriya took fourth. In a nail-biting main final, Neubauer narrowly defeated Caers by just 0.11 points, solidifying his win in the elimination round.
The men’s double elimination rounds began later in the day, with several competitors advancing, including Ercole Rosso-Chioso and Cosmo Pezzetti. The competition will resume on Sunday.
