CD Tenerife are set to face Real Sociedad B this Saturday at 13:00 (Canary time) in their fourth match of LaLiga Hypermotion. This will be their seventh away encounter against the Basque side, with their previous six meetings primarily in the 1980s, along with one from 1970 and another in 2022, resulting in a slight edge for the home team.
In their six matches against Real Sociedad B—spanning the third division and Segunda B—the Tenerife side has secured two wins and one draw, while losing three times. They have never met in the Copa del Rey.
The first meeting was on September 6, 1970, when CD Tenerife faced the second-team in the opening match of the 1970-71 Third Division at the now-demolished Estadio de Atocha. The team, managed by García Verdugo, comprised players like Domingo and Juan Miguel. Although they lost 1-0 that day, Tenerife would return to professional football at the end of the season.
Following two more defeats in the early 1980s, Tenerife finally broke their losing streak against Sanse on March 27, 1983, winning 2-0, marking a key moment on their path to promotion. The last encounter before their hiatus was on January 4, 1987, finishing in a 1-1 draw, a season that also saw Tenerife gain promotion.
After 35 years apart, the teams clashed again in the 2021-22 season, with Tenerife winning 2-0 at home in the first leg. On April 9, 2022, the visitors took another three points with a 2-1 victory at Reale Arena, courtesy of goals from Mario González and Elady.
The only shared connection between the clubs is Gonzalo Arconada, who coached Real Sociedad B before briefly taking charge of the first team in 2005-06, though he did not finish the season. His tenure at Heliodoro during 2010-11 was similarly unsuccessful, with five losses in five matches.
Several players have transitioned from Real Sociedad’s youth system to CD Tenerife, including Azkargorta, Iñigo Ros, and Mikel Alonso among others.
The top scorers in the rivalry include Alberto, Rubén Cano, Masqué, and current players Mario González and Enric Gallego.
