Canary Islands Detects West Nile Virus in Three Horses in Gran Canaria
Health authorities in Gran Canaria have confirmed the presence of the West Nile virus in three horses. This marks the first detection of the virus in the region.
The three animals were found in the southeast of the island, specifically in the municipality of Agüimes. The authorities announced that veterinary assessments and further surveillance measures are now underway to manage the situation.
The West Nile virus is typically transmitted through mosquito bites and can pose health risks not only to horses but also to humans. Although many infected people exhibit no symptoms, severe cases can lead to neurological issues.
Local officials are advising residents to take precautions against mosquito bites and to report any sick animals.
