The seaside town of Teguise has closed Caleta de Caballo beach for swimming following water tests by Public Health that confirmed faecal contamination. Rita Hernández, the town’s councillor for Beaches, announced the closure on Monday.
Officials have not yet identified the specific type of bacteria found in the water, nor the origin of the contamination. Water samples were collected on Monday, and the Canary Islands’ Health Department recommended the beach closure based on test results.
Public Health will retest the water on Tuesday to determine if it is safe for swimming again. This closure comes during the town’s annual La Lapa festivities, with a maritime procession scheduled for Sunday, 6 September. The outcome of the water analysis will decide if the event can proceed as planned.
