Local police in Arrecife have launched a sanction against the circus company operating near Vía Medular in Lanzarote after discovering the illegal discharge of sewage into the ground. Complaints from local residents about foul smells prompted the inspection, which revealed that the circus had opened a large trench to drain waste from its caravans.
The area has a well-established sewage system, but the circus ignored regulations by installing pipes that directed wastewater into the ground beneath its site.
According to the police report, the circus has violated three provisions of the Canary Islands Waste Law, which prohibit the uncontrolled disposal of toxic and hazardous waste that could cause severe damage to natural resources.
Located near the main court building in Lanzarote, the circus operates on privately owned land. Due to the serious nature of the offences, the Arrecife Town Hall will inform Seprona (the Civil Guard Nature Protection Service) about potential criminal responsibilities and will impose administrative penalties via the Town Hall’s Department of Offences and Sanctions.
