Thousands Celebrate Agaete’s Fiesta de La Rama in Gran Canaria
The village of Agaete in Gran Canaria buzzed with excitement as thousands gathered for its famous Fiesta de La Rama on Tuesday morning. Just before 10:00 AM, the traditional whistle signalled the start of one of the island’s largest and most cherished celebrations.
After a year of anticipation, locals and visitors flooded the streets, dancing joyfully with colourful papier-mâché figures, known as papagüevos, and joining the rhythmic processions. The Banda de Agaete, along with Banda Guayedra and La Clandestina, led the festivities, creating a lively atmosphere that transformed the town into a vibrant parade heading towards the sea.
The Ayuntamiento of Agaete noted that the event, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural, was marked by high spirits and energy, with no incidents reported, despite the heat.
As the celebrations progressed, participants embraced the essence of the nearby Tamadaba pine forest, arming themselves with branches in a symbolic connecting dance. A traditional Caldo de Silvana provided sustenance as the crowd made its way down Guayarmina Street, showcasing the rich culture and tradition that draws both locals and tourists alike.
The lively scene, filled with music and enthusiasm, culminated in a gathering at Puerto de Las Nieves, where celebrants reunited with the sea, the heartbeat of this coastal community.
