Yellow Weather Warnings Issued for Canary Islands
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued yellow weather warnings for the Canary Islands this weekend due to high temperatures and strong winds.
Temperatures could soar to 36 degrees Celsius in parts of Gran Canaria, with the possibility of reaching 37°C in some localised areas. Elsewhere in the islands, temperatures in the midlands and peaks will range from 34°C to 35°C.
The warm air will be accompanied by wind gusts of up to 70 km/h, mainly affecting higher areas, northeast-facing slopes, and interiors across the archipelago.
Areas Most Affected by Heat
The heat is expected to peak during Saturday’s afternoon. In Gran Canaria, the warning will be in effect from 11:00 to 20:00, particularly in interior regions where temperatures will range from 36°C to 37°C.
Tenerife will see maximum temperatures of 35°C in the east, south, and west, notably impacting midland areas in the south. The metropolitan area, including municipalities like Candelaria and El Rosario, will see temperatures around 34°C.
The western islands of La Gomera and El Hierro are also under yellow warnings for temperatures reaching 35°C, especially in the southern midlands and coastal areas. In La Palma, temperatures in the peaks, including areas like El Paso, will reach up to 34°C.
Wind Gusts Up to 70 km/h
Aemet has also warned of occasional strong gusts of wind from the northeast. Wind warnings for speeds of 70 km/h will begin on Friday night in the peaks of Gran Canaria, the southeast and northwest slopes of La Gomera, and high areas in western Tenerife.
On Saturday, the northerly winds will intensify in the interior and southeast of Lanzarote, activating the yellow alert from 15:00 to 21:00. Authorities advise extreme caution on roads, recommend avoiding prolonged sun exposure during peak hours, and urge residents to follow safety guidelines.
